This week we wanted to introduce you to Sea Cloud Cruises. Sailing in some of the most beautiful destinations worldwide, Sea Cloud Cruises operate a fleet of three Windjammers – Sea Cloud, Sea Cloud II and Sea Cloud Spirit.
The Sea Cloud is the oldest ship on Widgety by some margin – the four-masted barque is an astonishing 92 years old and has a rich and varied history; serving as a private yacht, a war ship, a coastguard ship and of course a cruise ship, it’s famous for the stunning design but also for being the first ship in the US Navy to have a fully integrated crew.
Sea Cloud, her younger sister Sea Cloud II and the new Sea Cloud Spirit combine a traditional sailing experience with the ambiance and luxurious charm of elegant private yachts.
We spoke to Antje Bosse, International Marketing & Sales for the line, who said “the ships are small and intimate, offering an unparalleled level of service and attention to detail. From the luxurious accommodations to the exquisite dining options, every aspect of your journey is designed to delight and inspire.
The art of sailing is our commitment to authenticity, deceleration and the experience of wind and water with all your senses”.
The small ships accommodate between 64 and 136 guests, and the art of sailing itself is a focus point – guests can learn about the complex set of sails on the ships and even volunteer to help if they wish to.
Sea Cloud Spirit, the youngest of the fleet, was built in 2021, but still maintains the style of her older counterparts to give guests a classic sailing experience; just with a few more home comforts such as the spa, fitness centre, and an onboard elevator.
The Sea Cloud was built in 1931 as a private yacht by American Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband. Originally christened HUSSAR, she was the largest private sailing yacht in the world. Not included are
Sea Cloud Cruises HQ is based in Germany, however onboard languages are both German and English. Similarly, the daily itinerary is provided in both languages in each cabin.
With the nature of the ships, the high level of service and the fare inclusions, Sea Cloud Cruises are a premium product and prices start at €2,995 per person for a 5-night sailing cruise.
Sustainability is a big focus on Sea Cloud Cruises itineraries, using every opportunity to set sail and only use the power of the wind. They avoid plastics, have reduced water usage and work with local communities to positively impact the places they visit.
The website says “For more than 40 years now, SEA CLOUD CRUISES has nurtured the concept of gentle tourism. Instead of fighting the sea with engine power, we use the wind whenever possible to get where we need to be – and thus prove that unique experiences and a healthy regard for the environment are not mutually exclusive. As often as we can, we sail. For this, the captain may have to change the route from time to time, if the weather conditions demand it.”
